Adult black - elegance black
.
I would like to talk about
the background and thoughts
behind the color "elegance black"
in the works I create.
I had the opportunity to be interviewed twice at the beginning of the year.
As I spoke about my career and the lineup of my works, I began to feel that it might be necessary to convey more about colors.
Color and monochrome
Since the scenes we see daily are in color,
we probably hardly ever consciously perceive the monochrome world.
When I used a film camera as a hobby,
there was also the option of monochrome film when loading it.
When I asked myself what I felt was different,
what I saw there was sharpness.
The form unadorned by color conveys
light and shadow.
I like how it conveys things directly.
When I became an independent potter,
I suddenly wondered what to create.
There were so many selections to choose from—clay, form, color, technique—virtually infinite.
At a time when my thoughts might have become disorganized,
I instead chose to eliminate options.
That was color.
Considering that testing various colors would also take time, I decided to simplify the colors.
However, both white and black are colors with great depth if you delve into them. Also, taking into account the impression when touched, I settled on something a little matte and subdued.
Black was born from this background.
However, I wanted a name that wasn't specific to the pottery industry, like "kuro-yu" (black glaze) or "tenmoku-yu" (temmoku glaze).
A certain crisp, adult feel suddenly came to mind.
"Otona black" (adult black) was born.
I considered an English notation and consulted a friend,
which led to "elegance black."
Creating something of myself, one by one.
Five years have passed quickly with the accumulation of such efforts.
I don't use black much in my current work lineup, but I wonder what will happen in the future.
